States of Matter

State of Matter

Matter is anything that has mass, occupies space and can be perceived by our senses. Matter is indestructible, i.e. it can neither be created nor destroyed.

Characteristics:-

                           i.    Matter always occupies some volume.

ii.    Every matter has some amount of mass.

iii.    We can feel the existence of a matter by sense of touch, sense of  hearing, sense of smell, sense of sight and sense of taste.

State of Matter

States of Matter:-

Every matter exists mainly in three states. They are – Solid, Liquid and Gas.

Characteristics properties of solid, liquid and gas :-

What is Melting ?

Process of changing from solid state to a liquid state at a particular temperature is called melting of fusion.

What is Melting Point ?

The temperature at which a solid becomes liquid is called the melting point.

What is Freezing ?

Process of change from liquid state to solid state at a particular temperature is called freezing or solidification.

What is Freezing point ?

The temperature at which freezing occurs is called freezing point.

What is Boiling ?

Process of change from liquid state to gaseous (vapour) state at a particular temperature is called evaporation or boiling.

What is Boiling Point ?

The temperature at which a liquid changes into gas or vapour at a constant pressure is called the boiling point.

What is Condensation ?

Condensation or Liquefaction is a process of change from gaseous state to liquid state at a particular temperature.

What is Sublimation ?

Sublimation is a process in which a solid directly changes to gaseous state without being changed into liquid state. e.g. camphor, Iodine, Napthalene etc.
